Deborah Walker Keegan, PhD
Does your medical practice have the right staff doing the right things? Have you made the appropriate changes to your staffing model due to electronic health records? Staff are the infrastructure and support for physician productivity and practice profitability and they are instrumental in assisting physicians to provide quality patient care.
We need to staff correctly -- too many staff and we have high staff costs and employees with too much time on their hands; too little staff and we have increased business risk with staff performing " "out of class" " (for example,
a medical assistant starts to resemble a licensed nurse and at the other extreme,
a nurse practitioner starts to resemble a medical assistant) and work falling through the cracks. It is important to have the right number and skill mix of staff doing the right things to optimize both the clinical practice of medicine and the business practice of medicine.
