Financial Health: Hospital Executives Number One Concern

Financial health and the environmental factors that influence a hospital’s finances are the most critical issues facing hospitals in 2006. In a recent survey by the American College of Healthcare Executives, 1 hospital CEOs expounded on the challenges they face in the coming year. At the top of the list: money. That hospital CEOs are concerned about their facilities’ financial health is no surprise given that one in four hospitals operated at a loss in 2004. The good news for hospitals is that the 2004 number was down from one in three in the preceding years and that hospitals achieved record profits in 2004. Early indications are that performance was strong in 2005. It is also telling that even with a couple of years of improved financial performance, this remains the number one concern of hospital executives.
