by Karla Kinderman, J.D., L.L.M.
In an attempt to put an end to managed-care abuses, physicians throughout the United States have filed a barrage of class-action lawsuits against a number of managed-care companies including Aetna, CIGNA Healthcare, Coventry Health Care, Health Net, Humana, Pacificare, Prudential, United Healthcare, and Wellpoint Health Networks. Many of these lawsuits have been subsumed into multidistrict litigation (MDL), a class action involving approximately 700, 000 physicians, known as In Re: Managed Care Litigation, Provider Track MDL. It is now pending before Judge Federico A. Moreno of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District Court of Florida. The consolidated litigation encompasses a broad range of allegations.
