On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, � commonly referred to as the stimulus bill. Among its many provisions is one that directly impacts employers and their group health plans. Effective March 1, 2009, an employer with a group health plan must subsidize health plan continuation coverage (either under COBRA or state continuation laws) for any employee involuntarily terminated between September 1, 2008, and December 31, 2009.
