When President Bush signed the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 (Medicare Act) into law (P.L. 108?173) during a Washington ceremony on December 8, 2003, virtually all of the publicity centered on the prescription drug benefit. While the controversies surrounding these provisions undoubtedly will continue to be examined and reexamined as Medicare coverage for prescription drugs comes online in 2006, there are other provisions buried in the 681-page enactment that have already had and will continue to have a significant and positive impact on how much physicians are paid for the care they provide for patients who are Medicare beneficiaries.
